The BMW M2 G87 is one of the most focused modern M cars: compact, rear-wheel drive and powered by the S58 twin-turbo inline-six also used across the current M3 and M4 family. From the factory, it already has the right ingredients for serious driving - a strong engine, a rigid chassis and a playful character that separates it from larger performance cars.
But like many modern performance cars, the standard M2 is designed to balance emotion, comfort, emissions requirements, noise limits and everyday usability. For owners who want a sharper sound, a lower stance, stronger response and a more focused driving feel, there is still room for a carefully selected upgrade package.
This BMW M2 G87 project by ATOMIC-SHOP was not built as an extreme race conversion. The goal was more precise: to enhance the car’s character without compromising what makes the G87 such an enjoyable platform. The package combines an AKRAPOVIČ exhaust system, KW height-adjustable springs, EIBACH Pro-Spacers, Stage 1 software calibration, RED LINE engine oil and a BMW OEM carbon rear spoiler.
Project Goal: Sharper Character Without Losing the M2 Identity
The M2 G87 already feels muscular and direct, but its factory setup leaves space for refinement in several key areas. The exhaust can sound more expressive, the stance can sit more naturally over the wheels, the S58 can respond more eagerly, and the cockpit experience can feel more connected to the car’s performance potential.
For this project, ATOMIC-SHOP focused on four main areas: sound, stance, software response and high-load service preparation. Each upgrade was selected to support the car’s fast-road and occasional track-day use while keeping the build balanced and usable.
AKRAPOVIČ Exhaust System: A More Defined Voice for the S58
The S58 engine is a strong technical base, but the factory exhaust system and emissions equipment keep the sound controlled and refined. That makes sense for everyday use, but many M2 owners want a more emotional and distinctive exhaust note from the inline-six.
To give this G87 M2 a more expressive character, ATOMIC-SHOP installed the AKRAPOVIČ Slip-On Line Titanium system together with the AKRAPOVIČ Evolution Link Pipe Set and Carbon Hexagonal Tail Pipe Set. This package improves the acoustic character of the car, reduces weight compared with the factory exhaust components and gives the rear end a more purposeful motorsport-inspired finish.
The titanium construction is one of the key advantages of the AKRAPOVIČ system. It helps reduce mass in the exhaust area and gives the car a sharper, more technical sound without turning the project into a purely loud show build. The Carbon Hexagonal tailpipes also complete the visual side of the upgrade, fitting naturally into the factory rear diffuser area.
KW HAS and Eibach Pro-Spacers: Lower Stance and Cleaner Fitment
The factory G87 M2 has a strong widebody shape, but the standard ride height and wheel position can make the car look more conservative than its chassis suggests. Instead of replacing the full suspension system, ATOMIC-SHOP selected the KW Height Adjustable Springs Kit.
The KW HAS kit allows the ride height to be adjusted within the tested range while retaining the factory adaptive dampers. This is a practical solution for owners who want a lower stance, more controlled body movement and a cleaner visual profile without moving to a full coilover setup.
To complement the lower ride height, the car received EIBACH Pro-Spacers: 12 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear. This improves the wheel fitment, fills the arches more naturally and gives the car a wider, more planted look. On the road, the slightly wider track can also contribute to a more confident stance and sharper visual presence.
Together, the KW HAS kit and EIBACH spacers make the M2 look more settled and purposeful while keeping the factory wheel and damper architecture intact.
Stage 1 Software Calibration and RED LINE 5W40 Oil
The S58 responds well to careful software calibration. For this project, ATOMIC-SHOP used a BOOTMOD3 Stage 1 map to improve the engine’s performance and response while keeping the setup suitable for a balanced street and track-day build.
A Stage 1 calibration typically focuses on optimizing boost, torque delivery and throttle behavior within the limits of the existing hardware and fuel quality. The result is a stronger mid-range, more direct acceleration and a more energetic feel from the twin-turbo engine.
Because increased performance also means higher thermal and mechanical load, the service side of the build was not ignored. The factory engine oil was replaced with RED LINE Professional Series EURO 5W40 Motor Oil. For a high-output turbocharged engine like the S58, high-temperature stability and strong high-shear protection are important, especially when the car is driven hard or used during track-day sessions.
BMW OEM Carbon Rear Spoiler: Subtle Aero and Factory-Level Finish
The final exterior upgrade is a genuine BMW OEM Carbon Fiber Rear Spoiler. It adds a subtle aerodynamic element to the rear of the car and completes the visual balance created by the AKRAPOVIČ carbon tailpipes.
This is not an oversized track wing or a radical aero conversion. It is a clean OEM-style addition that suits the design language of the G87 M2 while giving the rear end a more complete and performance-focused appearance.
Verdict: A More Focused BMW M2 G87
This BMW M2 G87 has not been turned into an uncompromising race car - and that is exactly the point. The project sharpens the car in the areas that matter most for a fast road and light track-day build: sound, stance, throttle response, visual balance and service preparation.
The AKRAPOVIČ exhaust gives the S58 a more distinctive voice. The KW HAS kit and EIBACH Pro-Spacers improve the stance and fitment. The BOOTMOD3 Stage 1 calibration adds a stronger performance feel. RED LINE 5W40 supports the engine under higher load, and the BMW OEM carbon spoiler completes the exterior with a clean factory-style finish.
The result is a more expressive, lower and sharper M2 G87 that keeps its original character while feeling more personal and more focused.
